Just days after Micron announced 35 million dollars of community investments, Micron Week kicks off today with activities to promote careers and community engagement.
Activities the first two days focus on school-age youth, introducing them to a range of technologies to spark their interest.
Micron week kicks off today at Onondaga Community College with educational activities and a chance to meet astronaut Jennette Epps. Tomorrow the hands-on program travels to North Syracuse Junior High.
Syracuse City Schools Superintendent Pamela Odom says the week’s activities were designed to engage students as well as community members.
“Whether you’re that young person on spring break, job seekers, business community members, families and those who share Micron’s passion to take action through volunteerism, this week invites us to imagine how today’s learning and service can shape tomorrow’s success,” Odom said.
Current job seekers might be interested in a Wednesday evening event at BOCES in Liverpool to review construction and other employment.
Thursday and Friday activities include volunteerism opportunities and a STEM festival at the MOST. All the activities follow a theme repeated by government officials and Micron executives, that the company won’t succeed unless the community benefits.
Last week Micron announced investments in housing, job training, child care, and transportation to help people get to jobs in Clay, where the huge chip manufacturing center is being built.
