Travelers to Hancock Airport could face delays and lane changes as major paving project begins May 3 on I-81.

Syracuse area travelers catching a flight at Hancock Airport might want to head out a little earlier in the months ahead because of road construction.

The Syracuse Regional Transportation Authority says a major resurfacing job on I-81 will impact travel between exits 5B-5A-4B (Hiawatha Boulevard / Destiny USA / Bear Street) and exit 8 (U.S. Route 11 / Mattydale).

Airport officials warn travelers to plan for the changes.

“Although this construction is not taking place on airport property, it has the potential to affect how travelers reach Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” said Executive Director, H. Jason Terreri. “We encourage all passengers to allow extra time, especially for early morning and late-night flights, and to check traffic conditions before departing for the airport.”

Most of the work will be done at night and early morning, but delays are possible. Travelers can check real-time traffic conditions at 511NY.org.

The project is scheduled to begin May 3 and could last into the fall.
