Drivers using the I-81 ramps at Hiawatha Boulevard have probably noticed crews taking down a large warehouse near the busy intersection. The emergency demolition of the Bodow Recycling building is underway after a resident alerted the city about a week ago that the south facing wall was starting to buckle.

“It was definitely threatening to spill out into the three lanes on North Salina Street headed towards 81on-ramp," Deputy Codes Commissioner Jake Dishaw told common councilors at a Wednesday meeting. "We closed off three lanes, declared an emergency, got bids. So [we're] seeking up to approximately $600,000 to cover that expense.”

Dishaw said city lawyers will try to seek reimbursement from the owner, which could come from the sale of the property.
