Maurice Brown has declared victory in the Democratic party’s nomination for the 129th Assembly District. The final mail-in and affidavit ballots were counted Tuesday.

Twenty-eight year incumbent Bill Magnarelli told Syracuse.com that he was conceding and congratulated Brown.

In a social media post, Brown said that he looks forward to bringing the party together, while working to make healthcare, housing and education human rights.

The final tally of 3345 votes to 3423 gave Brown a margin of 50.53% to 49.38%, avoiding an automatic recount.

Brown has described himself as a Democratic-Socialist, indicating a shift within the party away from established democrats toward more progressive ideas.
