March 1 is the set deadline for greater property tax relief.

Select Onondaga County residents may be eligible for additional property tax exemptions.

The Basic School Tax Relief (STAR) program, which offers property tax relief to qualified New York State homeowners, helped 568,000 seniors save a total of $800 million in property taxes in 2022.

To be eligible applicants must already be enrolled in the Basic STAR program, be 65 by the end of 2023, and earned no more than $93,200 in 2021.

The deadline to submit applications is March 1. Current enrollees who receive STAR credit instead of the STAR exemption will automatically be upgraded to Enhanced STAR if they qualify.

For more information visit the STAR Resource Center or contact the Tax Department’s STAR hotline from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays: 518-457-2036.
