New York’s 3.5-billion-dollar beef industry is about to take a hit.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee has proposed recommendations for Americans to increase plant-based protein consumption while reducing red meat.

Meats, poultry, and eggs are the last group to make the list, while higher calorie plant-based protein is moving up.

The guidelines influence food for schools, hospitals, and other public institutions across the state. With approximately 100,000 beef cattle and nearly 5,800 dairy farms in New York, the guidelines will face heavy scrutiny during the public feedback phase, with final approval expected in 2025.
