Nearly 6,300 absentee ballots in Onondaga County are set to play a key role in determining the outcome of the close race for New York’s 50th Senate District.
So far, about 3,300 absentee ballots have been received by the county’s Board of Elections, with another 3,000 still outstanding. Affidavit ballots will also be counted after they are canvassed.
On election night, more than 159,000 people voted in the district. Democrat Chris Ryan currently leads Republican Nick Paro by fewer than 600 votes.
This narrow margin has triggered an automatic recount, leaving the final outcome uncertain until December.
