Five new laws aiming to protect consumers and reduce costs for New Yorkers have been passed. The measures simplify health club contract cancellations, ban administrative fees on vehicle lease terminations, and require telemarketers to disclose key details within 30 seconds of a call.
Restaurants offering delivery must now link to sanitation inspection grades online, while a separate law prohibits obstructing labels on over-the-counter drugs, ensuring important safety information remains visible.
Highlights of the new laws include:
- Simpler Health Club Cancellations: Health clubs must now allow cancellations within 10 business days of receiving notice.
- Banning Unnecessary Car Lease Fees: Administrative fees for vehicle lease terminations are prohibited.
- Telemarketing Transparency: Telemarketers must provide key information, including the name and address of the company, within the first 30 seconds of a call.
- Restaurant Sanitation Grades Online: Restaurants offering delivery must link to their inspection grades online for transparency.
- Clearer OTC Drug Labels: Labels on over-the-counter drugs can no longer be obstructed, ensuring critical information is visible.
“With the signing of this legislative bill package, we’re continuing to make progress in making New York more affordable,” Governor Hochul said.
