Intense lake effect snow is hitting Onondaga, Oneida, and Oswego counties, creating whiteout conditions and making travel dangerous. The worst conditions are in Oswego County, where up to three feet of snow could accumulate by Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning until 4 p.m. Monday, with another Winter Storm Watch in effect from late Monday night through Wednesday morning.

Another nine inches or more of snow is possible during this period. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, causing significant blowing and drifting snow.

As of Monday afternoon, the New York State Thruway is closed between Little Falls and Herkimer, and I-81 is experiencing whiteout conditions, making travel extremely hazardous.

In Onondaga County, snowfall totals will range from six inches in the south to two feet in the north.

The Oswego Fire Department warns that blizzard-like conditions and frigid temperatures will continue through midweek, making travel extremely difficult.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles if they must drive. For the latest road conditions, call 511 or check New York State Department of Transportation updates.
