Commuters headed into Syracuse from Brewerton and Oswego County will face further delays now through the fall.

Drivers heading into Syracuse from Brewerton and Oswego County will encounter lane reductions on Interstate 81 southbound, starting March 11.

The New York State Department of Transportation says crews will demolish the Church Street bridge over the highway as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project.

One of the two remaining southbound lanes will shift to the northbound side near the Taft Road exit, starting at 9 a.m. daily. The lane closure is expected to last through late November, depending on weather conditions.

The construction zone extends south of the I-81/Interstate 481 interchange to Exit 28, covering a heavily traveled commuter route. The DOT is urging drivers to slow down and drive cautiously, as speeding fines are doubled in work zones.

The I-81 Viaduct Project is a multi-year effort to modernize the aging interstate system in Syracuse. State officials say the current work is necessary to improve long-term safety and infrastructure.

Updates can be found on the DOT's website and social media channels.
