The Fiscal Policy Institute says House Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts would cost New York billions and jeopardize care for seniors, undocumented immigrants, and safety net hospitals.

A state think tank says New Yorkers would be hit hard by proposed cuts to Medicaid in the federal budget. The Fiscal Policy Institute says the proposed House Medicaid cuts specifically target health care for undocumented immigrants, safety net hospitals like SUNY Upstate, and long-term care for middle class senior citizens.

They say New York will lose billions under the proposal and be forced to collect co-pays from Medicaid recipients. The proposed legislation also would add work requirements and extra paperwork.

The group also said the plan would cancel New York’s recently approved Medicaid managed care organization tax, costing the state $3.7 billion over two years.
