Syracuse Firefighters responded to a possible fire at 101 E. Water Street after being alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center.

One of downtown Syracuse’s best-known historic buildings caught fire May 20, 2025. Firefighters pulled up to the Gridley building on Water Street to find people evacuating as smoke billowed from the third floor.

No one was injured, as a sprinkler system helped contain the flames. There is a fair amount of smoke, fire, and water damage to the building.

The building sustained considerable smoke, fire, and water damage. Originally opened in 1867 as the Onondaga County Savings Bank, the Gridley Building was designed by Horatio Nelson White and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
