DMV cracks down on fake IDs at summer concerts

DMV investigators are joining law enforcement at various concerts this summer looking for those using fake IDs to purchase alcohol.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is launching its annual summer crackdown on fake IDs and underage drinking at concerts across the state.

The enforcement campaign, known as Operation Prevent, will start at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and will continue at major concert venues through the season. The campaign includes venues such as Jones Beach Theater, Darien Lake, CMAC, Bethel Woods, and the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse.

DMV investigators are partnering with the State Liquor Authority, State Police, State Park Police, and local law enforcement to identify underage attendees attempting to buy alcohol with fake or borrowed IDs.

Last year, 307 people were ticketed and 349 fake IDs were seized through the effort. Those caught using fake identification may face a license suspension or revocation for up to one year.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee supports Operation Prevent, and health officials continue to warn about the long-term risks of underage alcohol use.
