Lawmakers are revisiting a proposal to let supermarkets sell wine, with new provisions to shield small liquor stores by capping licenses per county.

A renewed push to allow wine sales in New York grocery stores is gaining traction in Albany. Lawmakers have amended a bill permitting supermarkets to sell wine - a move supporters say would modernize outdated alcohol laws and benefit consumers.

Assemblymember Pamela Hunter and Senator Liz Krueger are championing the bill, with the latest version including protections for small liquor stores that include limiting grocery chains to one wine license per county.

The bill is currently under review in both the State Senate and Assembly.
