PEACE Inc. pauses Foster Grandparent Program after federal funding pulled

A hand with age spots holds a child's hand.
A Syracuse nonprofit is suspending its AmeriCorps Seniors Grandparent Program after federal funding was unexpectedly withdrawn.

A Syracuse agency is pausing its Americorps Seniors Grandparent Program. People’s Equal Action and Community Effort (or PEACE Inc.) says money awarded to the agency to run the program has been taken by the federal Office of Management and Budget. Funding ran out June 30.

The Seniors had been mentoring at-risk children, and PEACE Inc. says 81% of participating students saw improved social-emotional skills and 92% of the foster grandparents say their mental and emotional health improved.

Agency representatives say they are hopeful the money will return.
