Voters could decide in November on the first major change to the county legislature in 40 years.

Onondaga County legislators would serve longer terms and be term-limited under a measure being considered by a bi-partisan group of lawmakers.

Terms would be four years instead of two, and legislators could serve no more than three in consecutive order. The measure to change the county charter is on the agenda for the July 22 ways and means committee meeting.

If approved in August, voters would have the final say at the ballot box in November. It’s been about 40 years since voters have had a choice in making major changes to how they’re represented in the county legislature.
