Democrat Chris Ryan, left, narrowly defeated Republican Nick Paro in the race for the 50th senate district.

Democrat Chris Ryan has emerged the winner of the race for the 50th senate district. Friday’s tally of affidavit ballots in Onondaga County expanded his lead by 87 votes to more than 1,400 over Republican Nick Paro, ending yet another tight race for the district. The nearly one percent margin is beyond the threshold for an automatic recount. In a statement, Ryan says he’s deeply honored by the trust voters have placed in him, and is proud to declare victory.

"Throughout the campaign, I listened to your concerns and hopes for our future," Ryan said. "You’ve called for a senator who will fight for good-paying jobs, quality schools, health care access, safe and affordable communities, and smart economic investments for the future. Now, I am ready to get to work delivering on these issues."

Paro conceded the race, thanked voters, and congratulated Ryan. In a statement, the Salina Town Supervisor says he’s proud of the race he ran, and was privileged to meet and get to know so many people. He says he remains ready to give feedback on the priorities of those who voted for him.

"Over 80,000 residents...have made it known that public safety and affordability are issues that must be tackled in the upcoming legislative session," Paro said.

The 50th senate district was wide-open after Democrat John Mannion decided to run for Congress. He easily won the 22nd district seat over incumbent Republican Brandon Williams.
