In a matter of days, those flying out of Syracuse or any other airport will need a Real ID compliant form of identification. TSA Federal Security Director Bart Johnson says starting May 7th, flyers 18 years and older will need a Real ID card, Enhanced Driver’s License, or an acceptable form of ID like a passport. Johnson said otherwise there could be problems.

“Be aware that you are going to encounter delays, possibly receive additional screening, or you could be denied access to the checkpoint and therefore not make your flight.”

Johnson said getting an enhanced Driver’s License probably works best since you can cross into Canada or Mexico with it as well. He says it’s an easy process.

“Presented a proof of residency, proof of citizenship, a social security card, proof of my date of birth, pay a fee.”

However, Johnson says the Department of Motor Vehicles has been getting slammed leading up to the May 7th deadline, so some people will need their passport or another acceptable form of ID listed on the TSA website. Johnson says the goal of the 20 year effort is to make flying safer.
