Hundreds of people filled Bethany Baptist Church earlier this week to say a final goodbye to former Syracuse Common Council President and civil rights advocate Van Robinson.
Robinson was remembered for his tireless efforts to undo the wrongs of the past when black neighborhoods were destroyed in Syracuse to build Interstate 81. Gov. Kathy Hochul said Robinson was brave enough to question “Why?” and pushed for it to be removed throughout his life. She wants his legacy remembered.

“Leave a lasting reminder of the man who cared so deeply about this community. So, I’m announcing that I’m going to work to have Almond Street, Business Loop 81… Van Robinson Way,” she said.
Robinson was also credited for getting many black leaders into elected office. State attorney general Letitia James said if it weren’t for Robinson, she wouldn’t have her current job. Soloist Kyla Clark who is the council president of Laurel, Maryland gave a moving performance.
“With my life laid down, I surrender now… I give you everything. Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me,” she sang
Robinson died earlier this month at age 87. He was presented with colors by a NAVY Honor Guard.
