Dozens of Central New Yorkers are expected to weigh in Thursday at the first public hearing about the environmental report for the Massive Micron project. This week, we’re checking in with groups and residents to hear what’s on their minds as they absorb details of the 20,000 page Draft Environmental Impact Statement. The Urban Jobs Taskforce advocates for disadvantaged Syracusans. Executive Director Tylah Worrell wants guarantees from Micron they’ll hire and develop local talent from the city much like the I-81 project.
“A good job means that you will have pathways to ensure that if you are here in Syracuse today you’ll make sure that you will get that good job tomorrow through policy and systematic change and enforceable commitment,” said.
A current Lockheed Martin employee said he formerly worked at a semiconductor chip manufacturer in Syracuse that eventually closed its doors and left him unemployed.
“Since then, I quickly realized that there’s a need of work protection. But, also need for more trainings for the workers’ safety.”
The open public comment period for Micron’s DEIS is underway through August 11th. Three public hearing sessions are scheduled on Thursday, July 24th at Liverpool High School in three different sessions: 10 am - 1 pm, 2 – 5 pm and 6 – 9 pm. Click here to view the report.
