New York State's DOT unveils mural project for I-81

Two art renderings proposed to cover the retaining wall along the new I-81 viaduct. The first is an image of a satellite orbiting, followed by three images of a female astronaut working. The second is an image of a woman playing a guitar in the foreground with the wheels of a train on tracks in the background.

Two art proposals for the new I-81 viaduct project. Syracuse residents and visitors can vote on the murals and several other choices that celebrate the regions history, diversity and strength.

The New York Department of Transportation plans a little art mixed with the construction of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project. The Department recently unveiled a draft of decorative murals for retaining walls along Business Loop 81.

Among the many designs are two celebrating the accomplishments of Syracuse luminaries.

A mural proposal celebrates Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten, a celebrated folk guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from Syracuse.
