Central New Yorkers can now apply for HEAP resources.

Central New Yorkers struggling to pay their energy bills can finally apply for assistance just as cold temperatures settle in. The federal government shutdown delayed the opening of the application period for the Home Energy Assistance Program — or HEAP — by more than a month.

Eligible households can receive nearly $1,000 to keep warm through the winter. Amounts vary based on income, household size, and heating source. Applications are accepted by the county departments of social services.
