A Number of civic and social-justice groups is planning a large protest Monday afternoon in response to the killing of a woman in Minnesota by federal immigration agents.

The groups have a list of demands to end local law enforcement assistance to ICE agents. The organizers include: Syracuse Democratic Socialists of America, Syracuse Party for Socialism and Liberation, Jewish Voice for Peace Syracuse, Syracuse Peace Council, CNY Solidarity, May Memorial, Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Network, LGBTQ Syracuse, Citizen Action and Indivisible Onondaga County.

They’re asking that Onondaga County end a policy of the Probation Department assisting ICE; that the State Legislature pass a measure prohibiting any assistance to federal immigration; and that the city council re-affirm Syracuse as a sanctuary city.

The rally starts Monday at 3:30 pm at Columbus Circle. A 4:30 pm march to Clinton Square follows, where a vigil will take place.

List of demands:

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon retract his direction that the Onondaga County Probation Department will work with I.C.E.

  • Ryan McMahon, the Onondaga County Legislature, the Sheriff’s Department and Syracuse Police Department publicly state they will not collude with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Patrol or any other immigration enforcement by refusing to sign any 287(g) agreement and sharing information gathered from Flock camera and any other surveillance apparatus.
  • NY State Legislature passes the New York for All Act, S.2235 (Gounardes) / A3506 (Reyes) If passed, this legislation would prohibit New York’s state and local government agencies, including police and sheriffs, from colluding with ICE, disclosing sensitive information, and diverting personnel or other resources to further federal immigration enforcement. By passing the New York for All Act, we’ll be one step closer to cultivating safe and vibrant communities for all New Yorkers, regardless of status.
  • Syracuse City Council passes a resolution that denounces the kidnappings to date in Syracuse and reaffirms our designation as a sanctuary city.
