The opening of the $100 million aquarium in the Inner Harbor is just a few months away, and thousands of Onondaga County school children have an assignment: To give it a name.

Students have until March 20 to think of a creative name that reflects what they might see in the tanks. County Executive Ryan McMahon told children on a field trip at the Museum of Science and Technology what they should keep in mind.

“We' re looking for potential names that capture both the excitement of visiting and meaningful learning that happens inside that facility," McMahon said. "The naming could highlight our regional pride, the mysteries of aquatic life or just make someone smile and say, 'That sounds like a place that I would like to visit.'”

One student responded with an idea right off the bat.

“The Bikini Splash."

McMahon liked the idea. But whether it’s Bikini Splash or something else, McMahon said name doesn’t forego sponsorship opportunities.

“For example, the amphitheater is the Lakeview Amphitheater, but it has a sponsor, right?" McMahon said. "So this is to name the actual venue, but certainly we will have a sponsor of that venue.”

He said they’re close to cutting a deal. Meanwhile, McMahon said critical pieces of the aquarium are on the way for an expected August opening.

“These tanks are coming over from Italy," McMahon said. "Some of the tanks have come. The largest tanks from Italy are at the port, then from the port, it needs to get released.”

But just what will reside in those tanks? McMahon said elusive garden eels, venomous lionfish, and disappearing sea dragons are just a few. He anticipated a good mix of fresh and saltwater attractions will make it a success.

“All of our projections are that the first two and three years, this is going to be a very lucrative venue," McMahon said. "I think what happens with aquariums, and one of the challenges is kind of in that year five, six, and seven, you need to continue to make sure that you have new exhibits coming in.”

McMahon says the county is working toward accreditation for the aquarium much like the zoo, and both venues will be cross promoted in marketing materials.

They’re also partnering with the Museum of Science and Technology on educational components that align with state standards.

The aquarium is expected to open in August of this year.
