Elijah de Castro | Report for America corps member

Report for America Corps Member | Health Reporter

Elijah de Castro is an award-winning investigative reporter covering health. As WAER’s Report for America corps member, he produces longform written stories and radio pieces about public health and health care in Central New York communities.

Before arriving at WAER, de Castro was a health reporter at The Keene Sentinel, where he covered failures in the state’s Medicaid program. This is his second stint as a Report for America corps member, having previously covered rural communities in Allendale County, South Carolina.

De Castro is originally from Trumansburg, New York and graduated from Ithaca College in 2023 with a BA in journalism. He likes playing ping pong and pool in his spare time.

As your health reporter, de Castro will cover health insurance, health care delivery and public health policy. He is always searching for new leads that you can send to: edecastr@syr.edu.

Report for America recruits, places and supports talented journalists in local newsrooms across the United States. When you make a tax-deductible donation in support of Elijah's work, Report for America matches it dollar for dollar.
