Inducted in 2015Lakshmi Singh has spent more than three decades shaping the voice of public radio, earning recognition as a trusted journalist and storyteller. As NPR’s midday newscaster and guest host, she has covered a wide array of issues, from race, immigration, and health to the arts. Singh’s reporting extends beyond the studio, including field assignments across Central America and the Caribbean, where she produced audio documentaries exploring the lives of marginalized communities and the impact of climate change on indigenous populations.
Her commitment to mentoring and advocating for stronger representation of people of color and women in newsrooms has helped cultivate a more diverse generation of journalists. Singh has received numerous honors for her work, underscoring her dedication to rigorous, ethical reporting.
Before joining NPR in 2000, Singh gained valuable experience at WAER in Syracuse, as well as NPR member stations KPBX in Spokane, WMFE in Orlando, and WAMU in Washington, D.C. She also contributed to PRI, Voice of America, The Christian Science Monitor, and Latino USA, honing her skills as both a reporter and audio documentary producer.
A proud graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School and College of Arts and Sciences, Singh earned her degree in broadcast journalism and Latin American studies, laying the foundation for her impactful career in public media.
