Heat pumps & the NY HEAT Act: Their role in reducing carbon emissions

WAER's environmental podcast Deeper Shade of Green with Dr. Chris Bolt

Air-source heat pumps and geothermal heat are both ways to heat and cool homes and other buildings that can greatly reduce carbon emissions. Burning fossil fuels for heat, cooking and water heating comprises one fo the largest contributors to global warming.

On this episode of Deeper Shade of Green, Professor Ian Shapiro is Associate Director of building science and community programs, working with the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems. He explains heat pump usage, how it can be retrofitted into buildings or used in new construction. He also touches on the NY HEAT Act, as of February 2025 going through the state legislature, and how it could help.

Music for episode 9 of Deeper Shade of Green comes from the Syracuse-based Jazz group E.S.P., the song is Reach.
