A blooming algae problem threatening our lakes and what to do about it

WAER's environmental podcast Deeper Shade of Green with Dr. Chris Bolt

Many lakes are seeing more blooms of a type of algae called cyanobacteria that can be toxic and choke out other life. The HABs, harmful algal blooms, have been increasingly seen in lakes, including the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York. During such events water can cause health problems for people and animals. Otehr impacts can be economic for tourism, agriculture and drinking water.

On this episode of Deeper Shade of Green, Dr, West Bishop of SePro, and environmental consulting firm, shares research about the causes of these algal blooms. Factors such as farm fertilizers and climate change contribute, along with urban runoff and natural elements. Bishop says understanding the causes can help lead to mitigation methods. He also suggests the harmful algae is being found in more and more waterways.
