Retired Onondaga County Sheriff's Supervisor Toby Shelley wants to be the first new face in the job in 20 years. He made the announcement Monday that he'll run for Sheriff in 2014, after an unsuccessful bid in 2010. That's when Kevin Walsh won his 5th term in the post. Walsh previously said he'll make a decision on running for reelection in January or February.
EXPERIENCE ON DIFFERENT LEVELS
Shelley's career took him from patrol deputy to supervisor, with stints as a field training officer and detective on the fugitive task force. He is also the former Fire Chief for the New York Air National Guard. Shelley served in Iraq in 2006-07. A release announcing his candidacy says in Iraq he helped set up security working with Iraqis and also gathered intelligence for the US Military.
PAST ELECTION HISTORY
Joe Price beat Shelley in a Democratic Primary in 2010. Shelley continued his campaign appearing on the November ballot under the Working Families Party. Walsh breezed to a reelection victory, with Shelley finishing third and drawing less than 10% of the vote.
