Syracuse offensive coordinator Tim Lester said Tuesday that sophomore walk-on transfer quarterback Zack Mahoney is "the guy" for Saturday's game against LSU.
After Eric Dungey left last week's game against Central Michigan with an "upper-body" injury, Mahoney and fellow sophomore quarterback Austin Wilson split time on the field. But Lester indicated that SU's offense will be Mahoney's on Saturday.
"Right now, Zack's the guy that's shown the most and he's the most consistent with what we're doing. We're confident that he can execute all facets of our offense."
Mahoney transferred to Syracuse from College of DuPage -- a junior college in Glen Ellyn, Illinois -- in January. He was originally listed fifth at quarterback on the team's depth chart. But Dungey is hurt, Terrel Hunt is out for the season, AJ Long is still recovering from a broken bone in his hand and Lester said Austin Wilson struggles with some facets of the offense.
That's moved Mahoney to the top of the depth chart. Against Central Michigan, he went 4-of-4 for 19 yards and added 12 yards on one carry. When he starts his first game Saturday, you can listen to the action live on 88.3 FM WAER.
