Eric Dungey Leads the Orange to a Win Over Boston College

cuse.com

After putting up a dismal three points in a blowout loss to Notre Dame at Yankees Stadium last weekend, the Syracuse Orange football program found itself dropping down to the 20th spot heading into today’s ACC matchup against Boston College. Even with a banged-up quarterback and a lack of success in marquee matchups this season, the Orange impressed fans with a 42-21 victory over a solid Eagles team.

Similar to most Syracuse games, both teams quickly filled up the scoreboard, with Syracuse maintaining a slim two score lead at the half. The early offensive success for the Orange stemmed from quarterback Eric Dungey who collapsed with a gruesome looking back injury against the Fighting Irish. Believing he would be out for the remainder of the season, it was not only shocking to see Dungey actually play, but also to see him finish today’s win with 18 rushing attempts and 3 touchdowns. He supplemented this running attack with an unwavering throwing motion that led to another 3 touchdowns on 364 passing yards.

Despite Dungey’s dominant performance throughout the entire game, the Eagles kept it close until the Orange gained the advantage at the end of the third quarter by stopping Boston College in the red zone on fourth down. This key stop led the Orange defense to hold the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game, allowing Dungey and the offense to control the game with their up-tempo offense. As the offense began to take control of the pace of the game, the Eagles defense eventually wore down due to the consistent runs up the middle with Strickland and Neal, as well as quick throws to the outside by Dungey.

With this win today, the Orange look to hopefully improve their resume slightly as the postseason arrives. Although not as impressive as it would have been to defeat Clemson or Notre Dame, this year’s Boston College squad has also been experiencing a season of significant improvement. Today’s decisive victory will not shoot the Orange up the polls, but it does solidify a bowl matchup with any teams ranging from the 14th ranked Texas Longhorns to the 25th ranked Iowa State Cyclones.

The bowl game that the Syracuse football community will end up with this postseason may not be what fans had hoped for after a hot start, but it does not take any of the accomplishments away from a team which has begun to change the sports culture at Syracuse University. From beating Florida State and Louisville, to cracking the top 15 in the AP polls, to finishing second in the ACC Atlantic Division, Head Coach Dino Babers and his roster have achieved goals that will begin to shift the focus from simply finishing seasons with a winning record, to bringing in skilled recruits who slowly help the program become contenders for major bowl games.
