Syracuse women's basketball has now lost two games in a row after its 69-57 loss to Georgia Tech. Emily Shiroff details SU's shortcomings in Thursday night's defeat.

Syracuse women's basketball was not able to get it done in Atlanta on Thursday evening, falling to Georgia Tech 69-57. This was Georgia Tech’s first conference win of the year, whereas the Orange fell to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play.

The Orange trailed by just one point heading into the fourth quarter. As fans have seen several times this season, the team simply wasn’t able to get it done down the stretch. Syracuse was outscored 21-10 in the final 10 minutes of action, propelling GT to the win.

The loss saw two Orange starters play 20 minutes or less and score no more than seven points. Kyra Wood and Georgia Woolley played 20 and 17 minutes, respectively. Wood managed to put up seven points. As for Woolley, she made one shot on three attempts for just two points.

What’s arguably more concerning is the lack of bench production. Syracuse relies heavily on its bench rotation players to give quality minutes or step up when a starter is having a rough shooting night. That’s not what happened against the Yellow Jackets.

Alaina Rice was the only bench player to score, and she only managed five points. Asia Strong, a typically reliable, safe option off the bench, played for 16 minutes. In those 16 minutes, she did not score, committed three fouls, and turned the ball over once without an assist.

Georgia Tech had one of its better shooting nights of the season, shooting about 43% from the field, compared to Syracuse’s dismal 34.3%. The Yellow Jackets were led by their leading scorer on the year, senior guard Cameron Swartz. Shooting 50% on the night, Swartz recorded 17 points, three rebounds and even picked up a steal.

For the Orange, it was Dyaisha Fair, as it usually is. The senior guard also put up 17 points, but doled out four assists, brought in five rebounds, and tallied five takeaways. Teisha Hyman and Dariauna Lewis also finished in double digits in the scoring column.

Lewis, despite the loss, played very well. Sitting for just two minutes of action the entire game, she recorded yet another double-double, her eighth of the year. Against GT, Lewis put up 11 points but, more notably, pulled down 14 boards, 11 of them on the defensive end.

Coming into the matchup, Georgia Tech was the weakest team in the ACC, having lost all seven of their conference matchups. Syracuse, on the other hand, was tied for fourth place in the conference.

Syracuse will head to Durham, North Carolina, to take on the thirteenth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Sunday. Tipoff is set for noon, and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
