Syracuse beat Lindenwood 5-2 in the first of two matchups Friday and Saturday.

The Orange opened the scoring one minute into the game. Stella Costabile found the puck behind the net and put it home for her second of the season.

Lindenwood responded with some strong play after the goal but could not find the back of the net. Allie Kelley, the NCAA’s all-time saves leader, made 28 saves in the game.

Kelley is one of the five seniors on Syracuse that are graduating after this season. Kelley set the all-time NCAA women’s saves record this season and has played all but one game for the Orange.

Jackson Kinsler said Kelley helps keep the Orange in every game.

“I know in all of her glory, she carries us each and every game. AK keeps us in that game…I was really proud of our returners and our leadership group for stepping up and carrying us to the win,” Kinsler said.

In the second period, Lindenwood struck first. The Lions tied the game at one on a shot from Gigi Pora.

It was another senior that put the Orange back in front. Tatum White gave the Orange the lead on a powerplay goal.

Coach Britni Smith said the team wants to continue its special teams success Saturday.

“Games can be determined by special teams. So, hopefully continuing to find the confidence in those and really lock in on those would be great. And then, playing for our seniors tomorrow as well,” Smith said.

White is the only senior that spent her whole career at Syracuse. She spent five seasons with the Orange and has played over 140 games for Syracuse.

The special teams continued to shine for the Orange. Kinsler made it 3-1 with a second power play goal. Kinsler had four points in the game. It was her first four-point game of her career.

Kinsler said she wanted to get the job done for her teammates.

“As much as I was excited that I had gotten my second goal of the game, I was just really happy to win it for our seniors,” Kinsley said.

Kinsler’s power play tally was assisted by Charli Kettyle. Kettyle is another senior on this Orange team. The New Hampshire transfer is leading defender’s on SU with 14 points on the season.

The other two seniors had no points in the game. Bryn Saarela still leads the team in points. She has 23 on the season. Saarela transferred from Holy Cross to SU for her final year of college hockey.

Klára Jandušíková is the fifth senior. She has 18 blocked shots in 26 games with the Orange. She transferred from Colby College where she played four seasons and was an assistant captain last season.

Kinsler said the seniors all helped develop the culture on the team.

“They’re a group that has a lot of experience and has a lot of leadership, and so they have really gotten us on, especially the newcomers and even me who didn’t get a lot of minutes last year, on what college hockey is like and the expectations and the standard for all of us,” Kinsler said.

The Orange found the night twice in the third period to close out the game against Lindenwood.

The seniors will be honored in their last home regular season game.

“I’m really sad to see them go, and it’s going to be really emotional tomorrow but they have set our team up for years to come. So, I am really proud of this group,” said Kinsler.

The Orange will play in a rematch with Lindenwood at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
