Syracuse drops sixth consecutive game at Miami 38-10 after Collins’ continued struggles

Back at quarterback, Syracuse football’s (3-7, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) Rickie Collins turned in another poor performance in a 38-10 loss at No. 18 Miami (7-2, 3-2 ACC). Collins threw for just 85 yards and two interceptions against the Hurricanes.

After the redshirt sophomore sat out in SU’s loss to North Carolina 27-10 on halloween night. The Orange fielded Joseph Filardi and Luke Carney at QB against the Tar Heels. The two combined for just 39 passing yards and SU head coach Fran Brown gave Collins another shot.

Syracuse punted on its first four drives, but its defense forced punts on Miami’s first four drives. On their fifth possession, the Hurricanes strung together a five-play 90-yard drive and found the endzone on a receiving touchdown by quarterback Carson Beck. Miami held a 7-0 lead with 2:13 left in the half.

The Orange had two minutes left to put points on the board, and Collins did just that…for the Hurricanes. On 3rd & 8, Collins tossed the ball right into the hands of Miami defensive back Keionte Scott. The Hurricanes senior returned it 38 yards for a pick-six, their second score in under half of a minute.

Collins and Syracuse managed a field goal on their first drive on the second half, but Miami found the endzone twice more before the Baton Rouge native threw his second interception of the afternoon. SU punted again and turned the ball over on downs in its next two drives. That was it for Collins.

When the Hurricanes took a 38-3 lead with under three minutes to play, Brown made the switch. Collins’ afternoon was done, and Filardi entered the game. The Syracuse lacrosse recruit completed three passes, and tossed a 17-yard TD to Elijah Washington-Baker with under a minute to play.

In five starts, Collins tallied nine interceptions to just four touchdowns. Because of his miscues and Filardi’s impressive drive, it’s possible that Brown turns to the freshman to finish out the year.

If the Dix Hill native takes over, he’ll have to wait. SU enters its second bye week before a visit to No. 10 Notre Dame on November 22nd at 3:30. Hear how the QB situation plays out in South Bend on WAER.
