After just two days of rest, No. 14 Syracuse women’s lacrosse (4-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) took down Virginia Tech (4-4, 1-3 ACC) on Friday night. The Orange beat down the Hokies 13-3 for their fourth straight win after starting the season 0-3. SU Head Coach Regy Thorpe praised his team following the win.

“Really proud of the kids. Being the third game in six days, they showed a lot of grit and resilience with their prep work, with the film, and with the scout team, so really proud of their effort,” he said.

Syracuse immediately got things started with three straight goals in three minutes. Attacker Emma Muchnick scored a goal before midfielder Molly Guzik slotted two home, passing her total of 14 goals last season.

The Orange kept the pedal to the metal. After Virginia Tech briefly stopped the bleeding off a score from attacker Lauren Render, SU erupted on an 8-0 goal run, including two from attackers Caroline Trinkaus and Ashlee Volpe. That gave The ‘Cuse an 11-1 lead halfway through the third quarter.

SU closed out the victory with scores from midfielder Ava Peers and attacker Ella Peers. Those were the first goals of both sisters’ collegiate career. Syracuse finished strong and came out with a 13-3 win over Virginia Tech.

In the Orange’s last matchup against the Hokies less than a year ago, Virginia Tech prevailed 14-11 for just the second time in the two teams’ history. In Syracuse’s defeat, VT’s Render and attacker Mia Pozzi combined for 11 goals and 12 points.

“I think Coach Caitlin [Defliese Watkins] and Maggie [Koch] do an outstanding job. These kids prepare and kick our offensive butts in practice everyday. It’s really great for our offense. I think they are getting better from it. They really work well as a unit and our midfielders love to play defense. I think that’s very rare in this day in age. They all buy into the defensive end,” he said.

It only gets harder for SU. Four of the Orange’s next five games feature ranked opponents. However, Thorpe and his team are just focusing on one game at a time.

“It’s just a challenging schedule. We go out to Northwestern, a top five team. They have ten days rest on us. I think the kids are just focused. It’s a great opportunity for us to go out and play a really good Northwestern team. At this time in the season, it’s about getting ACC wins. When you go out of conference, it’s about picking up wins against quality teams that are going to be in the NCAA to build your NCAA resume,” he said.
