After a dominating win over a top-five opponent in Northwestern last week, No. 9 Syracuse women’s lacrosse (6-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) proved today that Thursday wasn’t an outlier. SU took down No. 5 Yale (7-1, 1-0 Ivy League) for its sixth consecutive win after losing the first three games to start the season. SU Head Coach Regy Thorpe knows his players trust the process.

“The kids are buying in. We are a work in progress. The positive thing is, we haven’t played a full sixty minutes. We got to string together good quarters and good halves. We have to keep learning from teams that expose us,” he said.

Syracuse immediately jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than ten minutes into game action off of goals from midfielders Alexa Vogelman, Molly Guzik, and Emma Muchnick. Guzik’s score was her only on the day after recording a career-high six goals in SU’s win over then No. 4 Northwestern.

Yale crawled back in it with scores from attacker Ashley Kiernan and midfielder Kate Gould. The freshman ended the afternoon with just two points after erupting for six goals and an assist in Yale’s win over UConn on Saturday.

The Orange continued their hot first half with a couple of second quarter goals from midfielder Joely Caramelli to give SU a 5-3 cushion going into halftime. They were the junior’s first scores since February 24 against then No. 13 Loyola Maryland.

The Bulldogs chipped away in the second half. Yale’s top defense held the Orange to just one goal while attacker Ashley Newman recorded two second half scores to even the contest at five.

Syracuse sealed the deal courtesy attacker Caroline Trinkaus' go-ahead goal with under ten minutes to go in regulation. The ‘Cuse’s six goals were just the fourth time Yale had given up six or more scores in a game this season.

However, the Orange’s victory wasn’t possible without star goalie Daniella Guyette. The senior dominated in cage, making ten saves and recording a .667 save percentage. It’s the most saves in a game for Guyette since SU’s second game of the season against top ranked North Carolina.

Syracuse’s defense has also clamped down its opponents. Over the Orange’s last four games, SU’s allowed just over four goals a game. On the year, the ‘Cuse holds its opponents to under eight goals an outing, the second fewest in the ACC. Coach Thorpe had nothing but praise for Guyette and his defense.

“Daniella locked it down. Yale’s been putting up a ton of points on the year. To hold them to five goals was a great accomplishment by the defense. They’ve been our anchor all year,” he said.

While the road ahead is more favorable for Syracuse, increased ACC play ups the stakes. Coach Thorpe’s goal is clear.

“We’re fighting to make the ACC Tournament. I think everyone’s in the hunt. If you stub your toe too many times, you’re going to be on the outside looking in. It’s a number one priority for us,” he said.
