Syracuse’s pending new zoning ordinance combined with the replacement for I-81 has some raising concerns about gentrification.  The New York Civil Liberties Union says there’s nothing in the ReZone Syracuse project that calls for affordable housing in the corridor.

Residents in some Syracuse neighborhoods who’ve had concerns about problem corner stores for years are hoping new zoning rules might provide some relief.   If you drive or walk through parts of the north, south, or near west sides, it's hard to miss the proliferation of stores, sometimes several within a few blocks.

It’s been three years in the making, and Syracuse city planners are ready to present the final draft of a new zoning ordinance and map Wednesday that will shape the city’s land use for years to come.  The city began the ReZone Syracuse project in 2016 in an effort to modernize zoning codes that hadn’t seen a comprehensive overhaul since the 1920’s.

The City of Syracuse is embarking on the first complete revision its  zoning codes in nearly a century.   Officials say the overhaul of land use regulations is needed to keep the city economically competitive.
