The lowered national gas price this year comes as a relief from last year’s ultimate highs in pricing.

The ongoing tensions in the middle east are pushing gas prices to their highest levels in more than four years. In Syracuse, drivers shelled out around 23 cents more per gallon in the past week, according to the latest Triple A survey. The local average of $4.40 -a-gallon is about $1.30 higher than a year ago.

The U.S. war with Iran continues to push crude oil higher, which directly affects gas prices. Increased driving demand as the weather warms is also hiking prices at the pump. Checking tire pressure and combining even short trips remain some of the best tips for reducing overall fuel costs.

Here's a compilation of average prices across much of Upstate:

  • Batavia - $4.39 (up 22 cents from last Monday)
  • Buffalo - $4.41 (up 25 cents from last Monday)
  • Elmira - $4.37 (up 30 cents from last Monday)
  • Ithaca - $4.39 (up 25 cents from last Monday)
  • Rochester – $4.40 (up 21 cents from last Monday)
  • Rome - $4.40 (up 26 cents from last Monday)
  • Syracuse - $4.40 (up 23 cents from last Monday)
  • Watertown - $4.49 (up 30 cents from last Monday)
