Mo Brown celebrates his victory alongside Rachel May

Onondaga County Legislator Mo Brown has won against Shawn Fiato, Syracuse.com projects.

Brown, a progressive, was elected to represent Onondaga County’s 15th District in 2023. The 15th District includes the Southside, Westcott, and University neighborhoods of the City of Syracuse.

After Brown was not chosen as the Democratic Chair for Onondaga County following the party’s landslide victory last year, he launched a campaign for the State Assembly against incumbent Bill Magnarelli. Magnarelli has held the seat for 28 years.

Brown was optimistic about the success of progressive candidates and candidates in the Democratic Socialists of America, especially because of what it could mean for the Democratic Party.

“We can finally have a full discussion with progressive voices, moderate voices, tall voices, short voices, black, white," Brown said. "We can all come up with our collective vision, not just a certain group of people telling us what to do."

Brown said his top priority once he gets into office is to tackle the affordability crisis, including stabilizing rent and protecting SNAP benefits.

Incumbent New York State Senators Rachel May and Chris Ryan will keep their seats. May represents the 48th district, including parts of Onondaga and Cayuga counties, while Ryan represents the 50th district.

May said she will prioritize child poverty.
