Volunteer JournalistSkylar Smith is a promising young journalist embarking on her academic journey at Syracuse University's renowned S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. As a freshman with an anticipated graduation in May 2028, she brings a wealth of early media experience to her role as a content creator at WAER, Syracuse's NPR station.
Hailing from South Orange, New Jersey, Skylar's passion for journalism was cultivated long before her arrival at Syracuse University. During her high school years, she demonstrated leadership and commitment to media by serving as the director of her school's broadcast program and holding the prestigious position of editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Her journalistic potential was further recognized when she was selected to attend the School of the New York Times summer program in 2023, an opportunity that provided her with advanced insights into professional journalism.
At WAER, Skylar continues to develop her craft, producing both digital and radio stories with a particular focus on political reporting. Her drive to uncover and share compelling narratives is evident in her constant pursuit of new leads and stories waiting to be told.
