Revisit the Revolution: Lorenzo’s America 250th Speaker Series Laura Galke Presents: Mary Washington, George’s Much-Maligned Mother
Laura Galke, Senior Archaeologist with the global engineering and consulting firm, WSP USA, will discuss how Washington’s mother, Mary, is frequently portrayed negatively in biographies of George. This is a consequence derived largely from myth-making and biased narratives that focus upon amplifying the achievements of George at Mary’s expense. The presentation contends that these criticisms are unjust and misrepresent both Mary Washington as well as her illustrious son. Galke’s research on the Washington family spans eighteen years and has resulted in numerous articles and technical reports. She is also co-author of “Made by the Enslaved,” part of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of the Comparative Archaeology of Slavery. This event is the first in a series that will be held the first Thursday of each month through November. It is made possible by funding from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the partnership and support of the Friends of Lorenzo and Meier’s Creek Brewing Company. Admission is free.
