Another resident of Onondaga County has died as a result of the coronavirus. The Onondaga County Health Department said the victim was a man in his late 50s with underlying health conditions. Additionally, County Executive Ryan McMahon reported 43 were people in the hospital, with 23 in critical condition.

These cases reflect 15% and 8% of cases respectively.

“We’re starting to track these, just like we’re tracking positive and active cases,” said McMahon. “The 15% of hospitalizations out of our active cases has been pretty steady the last few days, as has the 8% of our active cases being individuals who are in the ICU.”

McMahon reported 20 new positive cases of COVID-19 and said they’re monitoring 281 active cases.

Health Commissioner Dr. Indu Gupta honored her staff at Thursday’s daily briefing for Public Health Week. Much of the staff has been working seven days a week in order to investigate each new positive case.

“I want to thank them because they are unsung heroes of this public health crisis in our community,” said Gupta. “And without them, we would not have all this information, which is guiding the public policy at the local level whether school closures, stay home orders, and many more.”

McMahon echoed the praise, presenting Gupta with flowers. They both continued to emphasize social distancing at the briefing. McMahon said the work we do, or don’t do now, won’t be reflected in data until 2 weeks from now.
