NYSDOT showcases key transportation projects at the Great New York State Fair

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is set to take over an entire wing of the Science and Industry Building at the 2024 Great New York State Fair. This year’s fair, running from August 21 through September 2, offers visitors an opportunity to engage with the NYSDOT’s mission and learn about ongoing projects aimed at enhancing safety across New York with five interactive exhibits.

Among the highlights is a scaled-down replica of the future roundabout on Van Buren Street, part of the I-81 Viaduct Project. The I-81 Viaduct Project Outreach Center, typically located at the Hills Building in downtown Syracuse, will temporarily relocate to the fairgrounds, where project team members will be available to answer questions.

“The Great New York State Fair is the largest extravaganza of agriculture, education and entertainment in all of upstate New York," said NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. “The Department of Transportation has a huge presence at the fair and we are very excited to utilize an entire wing of the Science and Industry Building."

Other exhibits include an interactive traffic safety display, live school bus inspections, and a display of a life-sized snowblower. NYSDOT will also be recruiting new employees at the fair and providing information about career opportunities within the department.

Fairgoers are also encouraged to visit the permanent Highway Workers Memorial, located near the midway entrance. The memorial honors transportation workers who have lost their lives while performing their duties on New York’s highways.

For more information on NYSDOT's role at the fair, or to learn about current transportation projects and career opportunities, visit the NYSDOT website or follow it on social media.
