Eligible New York taxpayers will receive one-time checks this fall, but fiscal analysts warn the refunds could strain the state budget.

New York residents will get their promised tax refund checks this fall. Governor Kathy Hochul says single taxpayers who make up to $150,000 a year will get $300 while joint tax filers making up to $300,000 will get $500 bucks.

It’s being called a one-time inflation refund. Lawmakers are using growth in sales tax money to pay for the program, but budget watchdogs have called the move risky for the state’s fiscal sustainability.
