U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is traveling across Central New York with a message for Upstate New York businesses hammered by the White House Administration’s on-again-off-again tariffs.

“The bottom line is these tariffs are devastating for our small restaurants, for our small businesses, for every central New York family. And for the people who hold IRA’s. Never seen anything so across the board, so damaging and they're chaotic one day he says one thing, one day he says another,” he said.

He stopped in Syracuse at the Emerald Cocktail Kitchen on Tipperary Hill to show how the taxes cut into small business owners’ bottom line. He says steep tariffs ultimately impacts the families behind small businesses and surrounding communities. Business owners such as Michelle Roesch said they’re in constant limbo.

“For Syracuse small businesses, tariffs have created the same kind of stress and uncertainty we felt during the pandemic. As a result, customers are watching their wallets. Staff are taking home smaller tips. And we've had to cut back on bulk orders,” she said.

The Senate reconvenes on Thursday. Schumer says he will make ending Trump’s tariffs a top priority among Democrats. He is calling on New York’s Republican Congressmembers to vote in favor of stopping further tariff adjustments by President Trump. Schumer is also encouraging residents to call their Republican representatives and let them know they’re against the tariff’s.
