This Memorial Day, you might see more faces of local service men and women in the U.S. Military are gracing the streets and parks throughout Syracuse. They’re part of a program called Hometown Heroes, which began along James Street and in Kirk Park. The popular banners are expanding to five new locations honoring veterans, both past and present.
Mayor Ben Walsh said they started it last Memorial Day weekend intending to leave the banners up for a three year run, but he said the demand for more flags has grown as families reach out to share their veterans’ stories.
"I'm proud of the many things that we've done, but in some ways this is as significant, if not more than any others, because it's an opportunity to very publicly celebrate our veterans, both past and present," Walsh said.
Banners now fly in Burnet Park, NBT Bank Stadium, near the CNY Regional Market, Upper Onondaga Park, and around the National Veteran’s Resource Center at Syracuse University.

Diane Greenpope, Vice Commander of the Dunbar American Legion, said when youngsters look up, the banners will inspire, especially when they see someone who came from their community.
"Each banner is more than a picture. It's a story of courage, sacrifice, and deep commitment to this nation," Greenpope said. "It's so important that we take time to reflect not only on their service, but on the history they represent by honoring their legacy, we remind ourselves not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”
Linda Brown-Robinson said her late husband is memorialized on one of the banners. Van Robinson was former Common Council President and civil rights advocate who also served in the U.S. Navy.
“It gives our community the opportunity to honor our local veterans," Brown Robinson said. "It also shows respect, gratitude for the veterans and active military, while showing pride and unity in the community.”
