Voters in the city of Syracuse and three towns in Onondaga County can start heading to the polls Saturday for their respective Republican or Democratic primaries. Several races are at stake as early voting gets underway.

Whether or not you’re casting a ballot in the coming days depends on your party enrollment and where you live. Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said Syracuse Democrats are choosing candidates for mayor, councilor-at-large, and education commissioner.

“If you're a Democrat inside the city of Syracuse, you're going to have a choice. If you're a Democrat in the county legislature's 8th district, you're going to have a choice," Czarny said. "If you're a Republican in Elbridge Cicero or Pompey, you're going to have a choice. And if you're a conservative in Elbridge, you're going to have a choice.”

You'll notice he also mentioned Republican primaries…in town government.

“I think we're seeing a lot more competition this year than normally we see especially out in the towns,” Czarny said.

GOP elections commissioner Kevin Ryan said the primaries for town supervisor and council are rare.

“It's very unusual. I mean, we on the Republican side like to joke that primaries are Democrat things," Ryan said. "We tend to solve our disputes internally.”

He sees this scenario two ways.

“On the one hand, some will argue that it's a good thing because it lets the voters weigh in and have a choice," Ryan said. "Alternatively, some will say that primaries are a bad thing because it causes the candidates to spend money, time, and effort that would better be directed for the general election in the fall to take on the Democrats.”

But Ryan said he isn’t too worried because whoever wins the primary in the solidly red towns has the upper hand taking on any Democratic challenger in November. Early voting takes place tomorrow through June 22nd at five sites across Onondaga County.
