A Syracuse detective holds the umbrella that shut down Destiny Mall. It was thought by many people to be an assault rifle.

Shoppers and employees at Destiny USA had a scare Thursday afternoon as law enforcement shut down the mall to search with a suspected gunman carrying what looked like an AK-47 rifle.

Syracuse Police took reports seriously as several people called in seeing a “suspicious person” walking outside and then into the mall. Around 4:00 pm a detective located the man on security cameras and shut down the mall. Police later found the man in the food court and determined the so-called gun was actually a large umbrella with a what detectives called a Samurai style handle that made it look like a rifle. No charges were filed, and the mall reopened a short time later.
