Democrat Ellen Block continues to lead Republican David M. Carnie in the race for Onondaga County 5th District Legislator, according to the county’s Board of Elections.

Block holds 56.2% of the vote, amounting to just over 2,500 ballots cast. Republican candidate Carnie trails at 43.8% of the vote with 1,968 ballots. These numbers are based on 88% of votes cast today having been reported by the district so far, as well as all of early voting and absentee ballots.

As a mental health counselor from Eastwood, Block said she entered politics to make local government more responsive to residents’ needs.

Her campaign focused on redirecting funds toward community programs, after-school initiatives and workforce training, while questioning the county’s $100 million aquarium project.

The 5th District includes parts of DeWitt, Lyncourt, and eastern Syracuse neighborhoods. Final results will be certified once all absentee ballots are counted.

Block will join 10th district race winner, Elaine Denton, in flipping legislator seats in favor of Democrats.
