Republican candidate Thomas Babilon lost the mayoral race on Tuesday to Sharon Owens, marking his second unsuccessful bid for the office.

Babilon said he plans to continue serving the community from outside City Hall.

“I want to help people,” Babilon said. “That's what I do at my work now, and that's why I wanted to run.”

Babilon emphasized that public safety, fiscal accountability and revitalizing Syracuse’s neighborhoods, which were issues central to his campaign, will remain priorities for him moving forward.

As Owens prepares to take office, Babilon says he’ll return to practicing law, providing legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney.

“I work at a not-for-profit,” Babilon said. “I represent people in family court appeals, and I will be doing that tomorrow morning, and I'll be doing that every day.”

Despite his defeat, Babilon said he began public service to help people and plans to continue doing so.
